You may have heard of colored diamonds and, of course, they’re fancy, but are they different from fancy colored diamonds? Not really. The difference is that the rarer colors—pink, blue, green, red—are usually called pink diamonds, blue diamonds, green diamonds, red diamonds. But the less rare ones, the yellows and browns, well, they get the name fancy colored diamonds to make them seem more special. But as with the other colors, even these become more valuable as the color becomes more saturated (although it should be noted that red, green, and blue diamonds tend not to occur in a wide range of saturations).
Brown diamonds are the most common fancies and, in fact, it was only in the past fifty years or so that they because desirable for jewelry and not just industrial use. Appealing names like “cognac,” “champagne,” and the trademarked Le Vian chocolate diamonds certainly helped. You’ll find plenty of these when you shop for jewelry in the DC area. You may also find fancy black diamonds, which are beginning to gain popularity.
The second most common fancy color is yellow, and this is to be distinguished from a white diamond which rates a Z on the D-Z color scale for diamonds, where D is the best and Z is the worst. These are colored so heavily as to be true yellow, canary as it’s sometimes called in the industry. Believe it or not, there are even fancy white diamonds, which are not the glittering beauties you’re used to seeing in pawn shops in Northern Virginia, but milky white stones.
Be warned when you shop for fancy diamonds at pawn shops in Loudoun, VA, that they are often treated, and not natural stones. If you want to know how to tell the difference, stop in to Loudoun Jewelry on Maple Avenue, and we’ll answer all your questions.
